Burn Injury Information

Most people are familiar with the terms first degree, second degree and third degree burns, but these terms are especially important in diagnosing the seriousness of a burn injury. There is also the possibility of an inhalation burn in some cases, which is caused by inhaling very hot air, fire, or even chemicals.

In the United States:

  • around 500,000 people are treated for burn injuries each year
  • approximately 4,000 people die of burn injuries each year
  • 40,000 patients are treated annually in hospitals for burn injuries
  • Of those, 25,000 are admitted to one of 125 hospitals throughout
the nation with specialized burn centers
First Degree Burn

A first degree burn is usually what a person experiences with a moderate sunburn. The skin is red and painful, but there is no or very little blistering. This type of burn affects the top layer of skin, or the epidermis. Most of the time, a first degree burn can be resolved without hospitalization.

Second Degree Burn

A second degree burn is more severe than a first degree burn, and deeper skin tissue is injured in this type of burn. Many times there are blisters and bleeding as a result of a second degree burn. There are times when skin grafts are required to help restore burned skin from a second degree burn. It is also possible for the damage of a second degree burn to get infected and turn into a third degree burn.

Third Degree Burn

The most serious of skin related burn injuries, the third degree burn goes through all layers of skin, and into the bone and connective tissues underneath. Because of the extent of damage, the third degree burn is the least painful, because nerve endings have been destroyed. Severe pain can occur when a first or second degree burn manifests on the edges of the third degree burn. Skin grafts are common with third degree burns, and sometimes amputation is necessary. Many times, this type of burn requires months and sometimes years of recovery and rehabilitation.

Causes of Burn Injuries

The severity and aftermath of burns affect each individual differently, but there are in general, six main causes of burn injuries.

  • Scalding- occurs when a hot liquid, grease, or steam comes in contact with the skin
  • Contact burns-occurs when touching a heated object
  • Fire-can be a car fire, house fire, even a campfire, that has gotten out of control
  • Chemical- occurs when skin contacts a strong acid or base
  • Electrical-also called electrocution burn, when electricity passes through the body, and can cause deep tissue damage
  • Radiation-can occur from sun damage as well as exposure to nuclear materials

It is always important to seek proper medical care for any type of injury, including a burn. Not treating a burn properly can result in infection and possible worsening of the injury.
